Gorakhpur Junction has a total of six platforms and is well-equipped with modern amenities such as waiting rooms, retiring rooms, food stalls, and other facilities for the convenience of passengers. The station also has a computerized reservation system for booking tickets.

Gorakhpur Junction is particularly known for its role in the movement of pilgrims to the nearby city of Kushinagar, which is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many trains stop at Gorakhpur Junction on their way to Kushinagar

The station has undergone several renovations and modernizations in recent years to improve its facilities and infrastructure. In 2017, a new AC waiting room with modern amenities was inaugurated at the station, and in 2018, a new foot overbridge was constructed to ease passenger congestion.

Gorakhpur Junction has also been the site of several historical events. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi visited the station during his non-cooperation movement, and in 1942, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose made an important speech at the station during the Quit India movement.
