Siddhartha was born in Lumbini, Nepal, on the full moon day in the month of Vesakha, which corresponds to the month of May. As a young man, he was sheltered from the suffering of the world by his wealthy family, but one day he left the palace and encountered the "Four Sights": an old man, a sick man, a corpse, and a monk. These sights convinced him to renounce his worldly life and seek spiritual enlightenment.
After years of meditation and self-denial, Siddhartha attained enlightenment under a bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, at the age of 35. He became the Buddha, meaning "the awakened one," and began teaching his insights to others. He traveled throughout India for the rest of his life, spreading his teachings and establishing a community of followers known as the sangha.
The Buddha passed away at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, India, on the full moon day in the month of Vesakha. Buddha Purnima is celebrated to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha, as well as his teachings and their continued relevance today.
